Couples Counselling

Relationships can be hard. Couples counselling can help you and your partner identify and gain insights into conflict, give you tools to strengthen your relationship, and also aid in conscious decision making around going your separate ways if need be.

You and your partner will meet with a therapist who provides a neutral space to help work through your challenges while cultivating communication and connection. Couples counselling is a type of therapy designed to help you and your partner work through any challenges you may be facing.

It provides a safe, non-judgemental space to speak openly and honestly about what you are going through, discover new ways of connecting with one another, and develop more effective patterns of communication. Couples therapy seeks to resolve conflicts, leading to deeper understanding and enhanced connection between you both.

Over time, you’ll gain insight into patterns and useful skills you can utilize well into the future. Our therapists may draw on a variety of techniques and evidence- based approaches such as person-centred, emotionally focused therapy, or the Gottman Method depending on your needs and preferences.

Couples counselling can also help strengthen the foundation you have built already, supporting greater trust, intimacy, and expansion as your relationship evolves over time. Many find that it helps them start their relationship on a stronger footing or re-ignite the spark that drew them together in the first place.

Is couples counselling right for us?

If you are experiencing communication challenges, infidelity, financial difficulties, trust, intimacy, or any situation that can put the relationship under stress, couples therapy may be a good option for you. It can also strengthen new relationships, and help couples to build a more satisfying, expansive, and fulfilling relationship.

Deciding to go to couples counselling can be a big step in any relationship, it is important to make sure the decision feels right for both of you. Going into couples counselling can open up areas of your relationship that you didn't realize were important to be looking at and you want to make sure you're both prepared to handle whatever may arise.

How long does the process take?

How long depends on both of you, your goals, and what you want to get out of counselling. Typically, couples counselling sessions can take a few months up to a year or more. Having said that, you may experience improvements faster - such as better communication with your partner during that time. We recommend regular appointments and consistency, especially at first, however, we understand and respect that this may not be realistic for everyone. Ultimately, it is up to you. You do not need to know now, you are always welcome to change the frequency of your sessions, should our schedules be able to accommodate, or discontinue therapy at any time.
